Gary Berard

I have performed improv at the Del Close Marathon (UCB-NY), the Boston Improv Festival (Improv Boston), the Providence Improv Festival (Perishable Theater), the NYC Improv Festival (The PIT), the Chicago Improv Festival (Playground Theater) and the Empire Comedy Festival (Tank NYC) to name a few. I am a founding member of the improv team, The Garys, who have performed in over 125 shows since 2009, and are coached and directed by the wonderfully talented Amy Goerlich of UCB. I produce and perform in our monthly improv show, Overtime (NSFW), at The Tank (NYC) as well as our annual improv tournament, The Garathon.

Recent acting work includes a supporting role opposite Rebecca Brooksher in The Muse, a short film starring Michael Stuhlbarg (Lincoln, Boardwalk Empire) about artist Edward Hopper’s Nighthawk painting.  The film was directed by Sophie Barthes (Cold Souls) and produced by Caroline Aragon of Film-Land and has been submitted for consideration at several 2013 festivals.  Other film projects include The Lincoln Division, a short film by Companion Pictures, where I played the lead in a sci-fi action thriller and Roomie, an NYU Tisch Graduate short film, where I also performed in a lead role.

Roomie has been submitted for consideration at Tribeca 2013.  I was recently cast as a guest star alongside the very funny Mamrie Hart on Sing-A-Gram, a web series produced by the comedy team at My Damn Channel, in which news (all of it bad) is delivered by a singing telegram.

I have studied improvisation, storytelling and character development, extensively, at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre since 2008.  A graduate of Syracuse University, I earned my degree from the Whitman School of Management while also studying at the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse Stage.  I have also studied at Caymichael Patten Studios where I focused primarily on Meisner technique and scene study and I continue with on-camera classes at One on One studios where I completed the Advanced Industry Workshop intensive.  I am currently studying with Bob Krakower.

I am a competitive triathlete and an elite marathon runner (2:45:45 personal best) and I enjoy coaching runners professionally here.  I consider my most enriching film experience to be with director Tony Kaye (American History X) on the feature film Detachment - where I was the stand-in and body double for Adrien Brody.
